Historique :	On connaît une vingtaine de plats de ce type en Auvergne, dont celui-ci figure parmi les plus grands. L'inscription du premier registre se retrouve sur quelques-uns de ces plats. La signification des inscriptions est inconnue et leur répétition semble uniquement un effet décoratif.

Précision sur l'inscription :	deux registres d'inscription autour d'un motif central, dont le premier porte quatre répétitions d'un texte, séparées par un motif poinçonné peu lisible. Le second porte cinq répétitions d'un autre texte. On peut se demander si le motif poinçonné SR, répété cinquante neuf fois sur le bord intérieur du marli ne serait pas une marque propre au fabriquant
